What great ambassadors you are! Not.

Numerous years of hard work and study paid off the day I was offered employment in Europe. We could pack our belongings and start a new life in a country where we didn’t have to fear for our lives on a daily basis. A country which acknowledged our economic and social contributions. A country where the kids can still play in the park without adult supervision. A country where I don’t need an electrified fence around my property or armed response guards for security.

It took six years of hard work in our adopted country to be awarded citizenship. We could walk tall, proclaiming we are South Africans by birth and British by naturalization. We have been equally proud of our heritage and our status as Brits. After all, we have integrated fully with society. We are equally at home with British friends as we are with South African expats.

But now I am reluctant to mention my South African heritage, even though my accent is a dead give-away. Not because of my own doing. But due to the fact that some of my black compatriots seem to believe that a combination of greed, violence, lack of remorse and psychotic behavior is better than economic contribution, compassion and social integration.

How else do you explain the behavior of one Terashiya Chiloane, a 19 year-old illegal invader from South Africa? He imported his own South African style crime wave to Britain, committing 23 acts of knife-point robberies in Birmingham, stealing cellphones, money and jewelry from vulnerable youngsters aged between 12 and 21. He executed this crime spree as part of a gang, sharing the loot after each organised attack. He was sent to prison for three and a half years and told that he would be deported on completion of his prison term. His acts were described by the court as “frightening and despicable behaviour. It was planned; it was concerted and it must have been incredibly frightening to your victims. It was prevalent offending and these people were put in fear by what was organised gang activity”.

Or how about the slightly more mature 35 year-old Amos Moobeng, also an illegal immigrant from South Africa, who lured two women back to the Devon farm where he stayed, assaulted the one who rejected his sexual advances and raped the other after he locked her in a room? The rape victim was an 18 year-old white British woman. The judge, referring to Moobeng’s comments to friends when he met the women that night, said: “You deliberately targeted two white females and it appears on the evidence that you targeted them because they were white.” Moobeng met the women in a bar and convinced them to stay the night at his house, since they did not have money for a taxi home.

After one of the women, aged 20, spurned his advances for sex he slapped her and then dragged her teenage friend into a room, locking the door so she could not escape. The judge said: “You dragged the other girl into the house and locked the doors so she could not escape. You dragged her upstairs by the wrists, causing her significant injuries, before subjecting her to a short but violent rape.” Moobeng was jailed for nine years.
