Iceland Commerce Minister Resigns

Bjorgving Sigurdsson

Bjorgvin Sigurdsson

The Commerce Minister of Iceland, Bjorgvin Sigurdsson, resigned from his post Sunday amid growing calls for a sacking of the government due to an implosion of the country’s banks and stock market.

Week-long protests have taken place in front of the Icelandic Parliament since is resumed business on Monday. Approximately 3,000 people a day have taken part in the protests, which were heated at times but remained mostly peaceful.

General elections are not scheduled for another two years but the protests have forced a special election to be held this May 9. Prime Minister Geir Haarde has announced he will not run again as chair of the conservative Independence Party, citing health reasons.

Urdur Gunnarsdottir, spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said government ministers were discussing the future of the government as a whole.

Iceland’s Progressive Party, which espouses an agrarian, liberal and centrist platform, has grown in popularity from 4.9 at 17.2 percent in the latest poll taken by market research company MMR.
