New York liberals are whining this morning after the state’s governor, David Patterson, has named an upstate conservative lawmaker to take the Senate seat left vacant by Hillary Clinton.
Patterson chose the NRA-backed Kirsten Gillibrand after Caroline Kennedy dropped her highly-scrutinized bid for the position. Political odds-makers had put Andrew Cuomo, the son of former New York State governor Mario Cuomo, as the likely pick for the seat.
Gillibrand is a two-term representative from one of the largest GOP districts in New York State. She first won in an upset against GOP Rep. John Sweeney. In November, Gillibrand defeated former state GOP chairman and multimillionaire Alexander Treadwell in one of the most expensive races in the nation.
Despite having the blessing of current New York Senator Chuck Schumer, Liberal Democrats have been wary of Gillibrand because she not only ran for re-election with the backing of the National Rifle Association, she opposed the TARP bank bailout program, and has been less than enthusiastic about gay marriage. She also has ties with former Republican Senator Al D’amato.
