Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted overwhelmingly Thursday for Hillary Rodham Clinton to become Secretary of State in the upcoming Obama Administration.
A full Senate vote will decide if Mrs. Clinton will have the position after Obama takes office on Jan. 20. Although her nomination is not expected to become derailed, with both Republicans and Democrats praising her knowledge and stance on foreign affairs, concerns about donations to her husband and former US President Bill Clinton’s library remain. Sen. David Vitter of Louisiana, who was among several Republicans who raised the issue at her confirmation hearing earlier this week, cast the lone opposing vote.
Republican Senator from South Carolina Jim DeMint said he also remains wary that contributions to the Clinton charity could pose conflicts of interest. But, he added, he wouldn’t stand in the way of her appointment at this point and noted that Clinton could become one of the nation’s best secretaries of State to date.
