Mohammed Shafiq, Chief Executive of the Ramadan Foundation in Great Britain, has publicly apologized for calling Prince Harry a “thug” over the weekend.
The Muslim youth leader and Lib Dem politician’s outburst was part of an indignant rant brought about by the discovery of video footage of the young Royal at basic military training back in 2006. In the video, Prince Harry refers to a fellow cadet as “our little Paki friend” and jokes with another about “looking like an Arab”:
Prince Harry has apologized for the nearly 3-year old comments.
Shafiq’s outburst brought criticism from conservative blogger Donal Blaney, who wrote Shafiq has ‘the ego the size of a mosque’ and defended the Prince. “The notion that calling a mate by such a nickname that he himself did not find offensive is “sickening” is laughable. To call it “racism” demeans a powerful word that is now bandied about by the left so often as to have become virtually meaningless other than as a tool to silence those (usually on the right) with whom one disagrees.”
Tory MEP Daniel Hannan asked, “Who appointed this man a Muslim leader” on his blog for the UK Telegraph, adding, “the fact remains that no one, Muslim or non-Muslim, has ever elected him to any office”.
In a press statement, Shafiq said, “On Saturday as the news of the racist language used by Prince Harry broke, I allowed my emotions to get the better of me and I called him a thug. On reflection I wish to issue a sincere and reserved apology to Prince Harry for any offense I have caused him.”
“I recognize that when we make mistakes we should be honorable and decent to accept them and I hope that his apology is accepted in that way, I never intended to offend Prince Harry in this way.”
Shafiq insists the term “Paki” is unacceptable, but he welcomes the prince’s acceptance that the word is offensive.
