The US Department of Justice announced Monday it is suing the city of Gary, Indiana for hiring lesser-qualified African-Americans over more-qualified White Americans, a practice commonly known as reverse discrimination.
The suit alleges that, in the fall of 2006, city officials placed six White applicants for emergency medical technician (EMT) positions on a hiring list, which stated that offers of employment would be based on the rank order of the individuals listed. The city then hired six African-Americans who placed lower on the list based on their qualifications.
Federal attorneys claim that one black EMT applicant who was offered a job by the city was not even on the list.
The city’s corporate counsel, Hamilton Carmouche, told local paper Post-Tribune that the list was prepared by the previous mayor’s administration, and not recognized by current mayor Rudy Clay. According to Carmouche, Gary, Indiana has a policy of hiring based on residency, not race.
“Federal law guarantees equal access to employment opportunities without regard to race,” said Grace Chung Becker, Acting Assistant Attorney General for the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. “The Department is committed to enforcing all the federal civil rights laws, including Title VII, under its jurisdiction.”

The sad thing is the people of Gary suffer, I'd want a paramedic (and they were all paramedics on the list not hired) who knows what is going on and knows their job the best rather than a black person who scored less taking care of me! If this had happened in a white community Jesse Jackson would be there breaking down doors because his brother wasn't hired. Come on City of Gary, you are here to protect the lives of me and my family.
