Roland Burris will be able to take the US Senate seat that embattled Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich appointed him to.
US Democrat Party Senators Harry Reid and Dick Durbin made the announcement of acceptance in a joint statement Monday, saying Burris “is now the senator-designate from Illinois and, as such, will be accorded all the rights and privileges of a senator-elect.”
Democrat Party Senators initially opposed Burris because of his appointment to the seat by Blagojevich, who is facing impeachment for allegedly trying to “sell” the seat.
In an interview with MSNBC, Burris said he did not know of any role US president-elect Barack Obama had in getting him seated. Burris also denied any behind-the-scenes deal with Senate Democrats that he would not seek re-election in 2010 if he was seated.
