Democrat Mayor Dixon faces 76 years prison.
Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon was indicted Friday on 12 counts with 12 counts of felony theft, perjury, fraud and misconduct in office, becoming the city’s first sitting mayor to be criminally indicted.
The string of indictments for the 55-year old Democrat Mayor include using at least $2,000 in holiday gift cards donated to the city for needy families to buy electronic gifts for her own personal use, and failing to report trips, fur coats and other luxuries paid for by prominent developer and ex-boyfriend Ronald H. Lipscomb.
Lipscomb runs a developmental company, Doracon, a minority subcontractor that has often gotten contracts that receive city tax breaks.
At a press conference with her lawyer, Arnold Weiner, Democrat Mayor Dixon refused to step down from office. “I am being unfairly accused,” she said. “Time will prove that I have done nothing wrong, and I am confident that I will be found innocent of these charges.”
If found guilty on all counts, Democrat Mayor Dixon faces 76 and a half years in prison. The four counts of perjury carry a maximum of 10 years each; the two counts of theft over $500 are felonies and each carries a maximum penalty of 15 years; the charge of theft under $500 carries a maximum of 18 months; misappropriation by a fiduciary carries 5 years; and misconduct in office has no specific penalties.
