Two men dressed as Hasidim pulled off a daring New Year’s Eve robbery of a diamond importer in Manhattan’s Diamond District:
After passing by security, the fake Hasidim made their way into Dialite Imports, spray painted other security camera lenses. The robbers then forced owner Atul Shah to empty the safe and used duct tape to tie up him and another employee. The robbery took less than 5 minutes total.
Shah is not allowed to comment on what was stolen due to insurance purposes but police say some US $4 million in jewels were taken. “But this is a big one,” an adjuster from Lloyd’s of London said. “There were some very big stones in there.”
The crime is reminisent of a scene from the Guy Ritchie film Snatch. One investigator called the caper “comical,” asking, “was it Hal loween or was it New Year’s Eve?”.
