Marxist Dictator Robert Mugabe has fired nine ministers and three deputy ministers in a move indicating he is forming a new government that will not include members of rival political party Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).
Mugabe renewed a campaign of oppression against MDC members after losing open elections in April 2008. Since then, the Zimbabwean economy has fallen deeper into an economic blackhole, a cholera epidemic has killed at least 1,600, and world and African leaders have called for Mugabe to step down.
Mugabe has made no movement on re-aligning the political structure in Zimbabwe since signing a power-sharing agreement with the MDC on September 15. The agreement called for Mugabe to remain president and MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai prime minister. The stalemate has been blamed on disagreements over cabinet positions.
Mugabe spokesman George Charamba told state-owned newspaper The Herald that a new government was being formed.
“What I can tell you is that President Mugabe has already started preparing an administration,” Charamba said. “He is taking steps towards an early realization of the formation of a new government as per the mandate given to him by all three parties to the dialogue.”
