New York City Council member and State Senator-elect Hiram Monserrate is free on $5000 bail after being arrested Friday for allegedly slashing the face of his girlfriend with a broken drinking glass.
Queens DA Richard Brown says Democrat Monserrate, who made his career as an outspoken advocate of domestic violence victims and liberal policies like protection for illegal aliens, broke a drinking glass and slashed the face of his girlfriend, Karla Giraldo, during a heated early Friday morning argument over something in Giraldo’s purse. Monserrate then took Giraldo to Long Island Jewish Hospital, where she got 20 stitches for her injuries.
Monserrate initially claimed he tripped while holding a glass of water and accidentally hit Giraldo. Prosecutors also say Giraldo originally claimed Monserrate attacked her, but later changed her story and said it was an accident.
Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer has condemned the incident and called on Monserrate to recuse himself from any role in his remaining days in the City Council. Martha Flores-Vasquez of Community Prevention Alternatives continues to support Monserrate, saying, “I know that Councilman Monserrate does not have an inch of violence in him”.
The 41-year old former Marine and NYPD police officer is charged with second-degree assault, a felony that carries seven years in prison if convicted. Monserrate also faces losing his New York Senate seat if convicted.

He’s a spic. He won’t lose a thing, even if convicted! It’s the fault of a racist society!
What shocks me is not the act of violence but how an ex-Marine and cop wound up a socialist(D)…..
“What shocks me is not the act of violence but how an ex-Marine and cop wound up a socialist(D)…..”
Probably was a cynical career choice… Republicans don’t have a very good chance in New York City, especially at the local level.
Yo! Hear me out: He’s a good brother, aight? There is no way we can judge this unless we can put it into perspective, which is impossible at this point…it takes two to tango.
I am willing to bet that he is no serial offender. Mr. Monserrate is a good brother who wants the best for poor people. I don’t know how much he messed up…all I know is that he is a good man.
