ANC leader Jacob Zuma has filed a lawsuit against political cartoonist Zapiro over a drawing depicting Zuma as raping the Justice system.
Zuma, who was charged with raping an HIV+ woman and taking a shower after wards to prevent his catching the deadly disease back in 2005, is seeking damages from the cartoonist for libel in the amount of 7 million Rand (US$725,642)
“Even in places where I’ve been found not guilty, he continues to find me guilty. He can’t be right. He’s totally out of order,” Zuma told South Africa’s Talk Radio 702.
Zapiro, whose real name is Johnathan Shapiro, called into the radio show to defend himself, explaining that Zuma is a public figure and open to criticism.
(Listen to the Radio 702 interview with Zuma and Shapiro here).
Zuma will likely be the next president of South Africa when elections are held in the country next year.
