The office of NY governor David Patterson blasted weekly skit comedy show Saturday Night Live over bit portraying the accidental governor as a bumbling and lispy recovering drug addict.
“The governor engages in humor all the time, and he can certainly take a joke,” wrote Patterson’s communications director, Risa B. Heller in a press statement. “However, this particular ‘Saturday Night Live’ skit unfortunately chose to ridicule people with physical disabilities and imply that disabled people are incapable of having jobs with serious responsibilities.”
“The governor is sure that ‘Saturday Night Live’ with all of its talent can find a way to be funny without being offensive,” Heller added.
While The New York Times reports Patterson as having an ability to laugh at himself, he has been very vocal about alleged racism from reporters in their coverage of his assendency to the governorship and US president-elect Barack Obama.
“I run the place that I work in so I don’t have to worry about being discriminated against, I think,” Patterson said over the weekend when asked about the skit.
