South African officials are scrambling to quarantine hog farms in the Hex River Valley after an outbreak of Classical Swine Fever has killed more than 900 pigs there.
The outbreak of this highly-contagious disease, which only affects pigs, is the first of its kind since 1918. Western Cape Veterinary Services have shot, disinfected and buried 1,200 more pigs on the two farms in the area, and are banning transport of pigs and pig products to and from the area for the next four weeks. People leaving the quarantine site must have their clothing and vehicles thoroughly disinfected before they leave.
Agriculture department national spokesperson Steve Galane says no other areas have shown signs of the disease so far. Pork is the third most popular meat in South Africa, after chicken and beef.
