Despite being flooded by a tsunami of scandal last summer, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats have voted to keep fellow Democrat Charlie “Red” Rangel in his powerful leadership position at the Ways and Means Committee.
The New York congressman is being investigated for a wide-ranging of charges, including a byzantine accounting of the value of Florida property, a cozy rent-controlled deal with a New York real estate broker, abuse of House parking privileges and a shady kickback scheme involving tax loopholes for big oil companies. Republican leaders, The New York Times and The Right Perspective have called on Rangel to step down from his position on The House Ways and Means Committee.
Speaker Pelosi has also publicly stated that the ethics probe will end by January 3 of 2009. Pelosi is now battling GOP charges that she has tampered with the House ethics committee’s investigation by making the announcement by passing blame on to her own staff, who allegedly told her that committee investigations normally end rather quickly.
