A puzzling set of announcements from London’s The Telegraph put South Africa among the most popular and most dangerous places to visit in the world.
Telegraph readers chose South Africa as their third “Best non-European Country” to visit in the world, and Cape Town as their most favorite city. The 40,000 readers polled cited Cape Town’s stunning Table Mountain backdrop, fine wines and lush countryside as reasons to visit.
Tourists to South Africa should not let their guard down while visiting however, as The Telegraph has also voted South Africa as one of the most dangerous places in the world, alongside India, Thailand, and Iraq. This assessment is backed by the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), which warns tourists South Africa has “an underlying threat from terrorism”.
Violent crime is rampant in South Africa. Rape is of particular concern, as one woman is raped every 26 seconds and two out of five boys are raped there. Plaasmorde is the Afrikaans name given to the characteristic home invasions and murders perpetuated by black Africans against Boer-Afrikaaners in South Africa. More than 2,000 Boere-Afrikaaners have been murdered in Plaasmorde attacks since the so-called “turn over” in 1994.
