Saxby Chambliss Accepts Re-election
Democrat Party plans for a fillibuster-proof majority were thwarted Tuesday as Georgia Republican Saxby Chambliss won a hard-fought runoff vote.
With 70 percent of the precincts reporting, Chambliss captured 60 percent to Democrat Party rival Jim Martin’s 40 percent. The runoff saw heavy-hitters campaign in the state, including GOP VP candidate Sarah Palin making personal political stump speeches for Chambliss and US President-elect Barack Obama record “robo-phone” spots for Martin.
Republican anger over Chambliss’ voting for immigration amnesty and giving a $700 billion blank check to the financial services industry was quelled by fear of giving Democrats a legislative blank check in the Senate.
National focus now centers on Minnesota, where another hotly-contested Senatorial election between Democrat Al Franken and Republican incumbent Norm Coleman will likely extened into early next year.
