US president-elect Barack Obama, whose criticism of overspending and compassion for the downtrodden during tough economic times helped him win the election, has bought his notriously-frugal wife Michelle a $30,000 thank-you gift of “bling“.
The diamond-encrusted ring is made from rhodium, the world’s most expensive metal. Only about 25 tons of rhodium are mined each year, mostly in South Africa, and as a result its price is typically around $7,500 an ounce.
When the GOP was under fire last October during the presidential election for spending more than $150,000 on the wardrobe for VP-candidate Sarah Palin, Michelle Obama bragged about her frugal clothing budget on The Tonight Show.
