A Southern Africa regional court in Namibia has ruled in favor of 72 White Zimbabwean farmers who claimed the Mugabe regime had illegally expropriated their farms simply because they are White.
The landmark decision from the Southern African Development Community court ruled that Mugabe’s “reform” programs were discriminatory against Whites and the farmers must be allowed to return to their farms unhindered.
“Its effects make it discriminatory because targeted agricultural land (is) all owned by white farmers,” Judge Louis Mondhlane said, adding that the Mugabe regime “should shoulder responsibility and pay compensation to the farmers.”
The victorious White farmers were jubilant at the decision. “It’s unbelievable,” said one. “The end of a long battle. We are going home to farm.” The Mugabe regime was unavailable for comment, but has said the past that the regional court had no jurisdiction in Zimbabwe’s affairs.
The landmark decision will likely have a wider implication as the South African government considers its own plans to expropriate White-owned farms there.
