Zindzi Mandela, the youngest daughter of former South African president Nelson Mandela and his wife Winnie, faces eviction from her rented home in the neighborhood of Saxonwold, Johnaesburg for not paying rent and allegedly trashing the place.
Landlady Michelle Cathrall says Mandela was “polite and friendly” at first. Things turned ugly when Mandela stopped paying the R32000 (USD$3,146) rent in May, causing financial stress for Cathrall, who had to pay her own rent as well as the house’s bond, water and electricity.
Cathrall also charges Mandela has “absolutely trashed” her Saxonwold home. An independent surveyor submitted a 17-page report documenting holes in the floors and walls, “missing” doors, a broken chandelier and watermarks on expensive yellowwood tables. Cathrall said it was clear that the house was “full” of people and, in addition to the four bedrooms, two of the three lounges had been converted into makeshift bedrooms.
Through her attorney, Mandela claims she has paid two months’ deposit to cover any damage caused and “denies any of the above insinuations”. He also said she lived in the home with her “children and domestic workers”. Different lump-sum payments have been made to Cathrall to cover the back rent, including R195000 ($USD 19,174) from Mvelaphanda, the industrial group of companies headed by Tokyo Sexwale.
