The downtown Kopeka, Kansas McDonald’s has put the kaibosh on plans to use their restaurant as Ground Zero for a movement to create a national holiday honoring president-elect Barack Obama.
The movement, headed by local anti-racist activist Sonny Scroggins and his group “Bias Busters”, was told explicitly by restaurant manager Lamont Lassiter they were not welcome. “I called him and said, ‘Look, you can’t do this, you can’t have a Barack Obama rally, you can’t serve Barack Obama cake,’” says Lassiter. “We can’t picks sides, discuss political things right here at McDonald’s.”
Scroggins, whose activist work includes holding a candlelight vigil for a mudered homeless “lobbyist” and sex offender, says he “is in this for the long term” and will move his planning point to the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library.
