School-age black South African children are rejecting African languages and taking up the traditionally-white languages English and Afrikaans.
South African educators believe the reasons vary from English and Afrikaans being easier and more readily spoken throughout the country, to black African languages being harder to learn.
Displaying a flash of racism, Limpopo’s education MEC, Aaron Motsoaledi explained, “many parents are stupidly excited about how well their children speak English. They proudly display them at funerals to read obituaries”.
South African educators are exploring ways to make black African languages more popular to learn for students.
