Chinese Hackers Hit White House System, Campaign Websites

Federal officials report that Chinese hackers have attacked the Obama and McCain campaign websites and broken into the White House computer network several times in incidents beginning this past summer.

The Obama and McCain campaign websites fell victim to sophisticated phishing attacks emanating from an “unknown foreign entity” over the summer, which was later confirmed to have been China. Confidential documents from both campaigns were stolen during the attacks.

Security at the White House computer system has also been breached multiple times by hackers emanating from China. Private e-mail correspondence between government officials was stolen in the attacks. Federal officials believe the characteristics of the break-ins indicate Chinese government intelligence was behind the attacks.
