Iraqi Legislature member Mohammed al-Mehmedawi of al-Fadila bloc has confirmed that president-elect Barack Obama negotiated with Iraqi officials during the presidential campaign to not bring US troops home until after the end of the Bush Administration.
The confirmation comes amidst growing calls from Iraqi lawmakers on President-elect Obama to make good on his campaign promise to withdraw US troops from their country as soon as possible.
Iraqi lawmaker Hashim al-Taee of the Iraqi Accord Front (IAF) said the Iraqi-U.S. security pact, which determines the status of US troops stationed in the country, was “moving ahead” and “will be signed soon, and will not be affected by the new president”. However, Mohammed al-Mehmedawi has publicly said that “Obama advised Iraqi politicians not to sign the pact.”
