A pregnant White woman denied service at three government-run hospitals after she went into labor could have given birth on the floor if her case were truly an emergency, South African Health MEC Fish Mahalela has said.
The shockingly callous statement came after questioning by the Afrikaans-language Beeld (you can listen to the 2-minute audio via this link to their website). Mahalela repeats this statement several times and then breaks out in laughter. Other ANC politicans can be heard laughing about the statement in the background.
The pregnant white woman, 21-year old Sina Minnie, was rushed from one government-run hospital to the next – for a total trip of about 200 kilometers – without being admitted. Sina Minnie gave birth within minutes of her arrival at the third government-run hospital.
Fish Mahlalela was reportedly at the center of conspiracy to arrest Bushbuckridge Mayor Milton Morema, due to his support for ANC leader Jacob Zuma. Morema was arrested on April 10 with two others and charged with the murder of Jeffrey Sedibe. The case was thrown out of court after a judge concluded the case had been brought as a result of political influence.
