A bitter Florida State Senate campaign has taken a nastier turn after Republican candidate Nancy Detert received e-mail death threats and had her e-mail account hacked.
“I got a death threat by email. It said ‘I am going to assassinate Nancy Detert. It will be from a distance, with a sniper rifle’,” says Detert. “Pretty soon my entire system got hacked into, my contact list stolen, and I couldn’t get into any of my own Yahoo mail. And then people stated getting nasty emails that looked like they were from me”. The slanderous emails contained embarrassing and hurtful lies about Detert and her family.
Things got worse on Tuesday after Detert got another e-mail threat telling her to “withdraw from the race or things will come out that will embarrass her and her family,” says Lt. Chuck Lesaltato, who is heading an investigation of the incidents.
Cyber attacks have become a new election campaign “dirty trick”, with the victims being Republicans. Sarah Palin notably had her e-mail accounts hacked into and its private information spread across the Internet by hackers associated with the group Anonymous. It is also believed that the McCain campaign worker who faked a politically-motivated “hate crime” was or is associated with the /b/tards, an offshoot of Anonymous.
Detert’s Democrat Party rival, Morgan Bentley, has condemned the hacking attacks. “This type of behavior is outrageous,” Bentley said in a press release. “I hope the authorities quickly find the person responsible and my sympathy goes out to Nancy.”
