ANC leader Jacob Zuma is in Washington, DC on a public relations tour that looks to quell fears that the recent political upheaval in South Africa, which have already seen one killed in partisan violence, will not lead to an all-out civil war.
“No, the ANC is not in crisis,” Zuma told the Voice of America. Zuma dismissed the breakaway party led by Terror Lekota as “very few” who are “dissatisfied” with not getting their way in the ANC. Zuma flatly derided claims that the ANC-breakaway party could pull as much as 40% of support away from the ANC.
Zuma also said there was no reason for him to comment on calls to violence led by the miliatant ANC Youth League. “What was I supposed to do?”, he plaintantly asked, adding the matter was being addressed “internally”.
