Residents of Harvey, Illinois, have not gotten their mail for about two weeks after the US Post Office suspended deliveries there because postal carriers are simply too afraid to walk its south Chicago streets.
Mail delivery reportedly stopped on Oct. 10 after a shooting occurred near a postal carrier making daily rounds in the nearly 80% African-American, Democrat Party-controlled city. Mail is being held at the local post office and there is talk of creating a cluster box for mail pick-up, which does not please residents.
“We have a lot of elderly people, a lot of older people that’s working, and for us to have to go to that corner to pick up our mail, that’s unsafe for us,” says Venus Jones, whose home has been broken into three times in the past 30 days.
Another option postal authorities are exploring is to have police escort mail carriers while they drop letters off along their routes.
