The continual opening of new crime-fighting franchises from the Guardian Angels may be ill-thought out and causing their early demise, based on statements made from a Mississippi group member.
“We don’t know what kind of crime Meridian has but that’s not the point,” said Bennie Jones, from the Jackson franchise, when asked by reporters about the group’s expansion into Meridian, MS. Recent franchises opened in Boston’s Hub district, Norwalk, Connecticut and Halifax, Nova Scotia have all faired poorly.
The Guardian Angels depends on well-meaning citizens concerned with the safety of their neighborhoods to don red berets and white t-shirts donned with a mysterious, all-seeing eye logo and put themselves at risk patrolling the seedier parts of their towns. Angel “recruits” donate their time, pay for their own transport, and even must sign waivers removing liability from the Guardian Angels should anything happen to them. Leftist lawyer Ron Kuby recently said that Guardian Angels leader Curtis Sliwa, with whom Kuby hosted a successful talk radio show with, was “not trusted to tell the truth” about important matters.
The deep-south town of Merridian has seen a recent population influx of apporximately 18,000 Hurricane Katrina refugees from New Orleans, Louisiana. Despite claims made on the city’s website, violent and property crime in the town of roughly 38,000 is higher than the state average.
