Switzerland Bans Humiliation Of Plants

The Swiss Parliament has banned the humiliation of plants, after asking a panel of lawyers, philosophers, geneticists and even theologians to determine the meaning of dignity when it comes to vegetation.

The panel published a paper on “the moral consideration of plants for their own sake” which contends that even randomly knocking off wild flowers on the side of a road is morally wrong.

While the law does on the outset appear to be silly hippie clap trap, it does have strong implications for genetic engineering of crops. The Swiss constitution was amended more than a decade ago to defend the dignity of all creatures, including vegetation, against unwanted repercussions of genetic engineering. This amendment was recently turned into law and is known as the Gene Technology Act.
