Russia, China Settle Land Dispute

Russia and China have settled a decades-long land dispute that prompted battles between the two countries during the 1960′s.

The agreement, signed this past July, has Russia handing over 170 sq km of land, including Tarabarov Island, known as Yinlong in Chinese, and half of Bolshoi Ussuriysky Island, called Heixiazi in Chinese, to China. The last Russian troops left the territories yesterday in an official ceremony.

The settling of differences marks Russia’s growing resurgence as a viable counter-balance to the United States on the international scene.
