Austrian far-right politician Joerg Haider has been killed in a car crash near Klagenfurt, capital of the province of Carinthia where he was governor. Haider was 58.
Haider’s sudden death comes at a time when a resurgent far-right took power in a coalition government with conservatives in Austria only weeks ago. In elections held on September 28th, The Social Democrats (SPOe) took 29.7 percent of the vote while the conservatives (OeVP) secured 25.6 percent, the far-right Freedom Party (FPOe) won 18.0 percent and, stunning political pundits, Haider’s Alliance for Austria’s Future (BZOe) doubled its previous election results with 11.0 percent. Leftist politicians caused a snivelstorm upon the win, whining that Austria had “rejected European values”.
Haider had started to build “holding facilities” in Carinthia for asylum seekers suspected of being criminals, as a “security precaution” for the Austrian people.
Haider was driving alone around 2 am (0000 GMT) when his car veered off the road and flipped over after passing another vehicle. Haider died of serious injuries to the head and chest at the scene, police said, who are still investigating the scene. No one else was injured in the accident.
Haider rose to notoriety In 2000, as his Freedom Party formed a coalition government with the conservative People’s Party. The European Union reacted by refusing to acknowledge and implementing Rhodean-sized diplomatic sanctions against Austria, forcing the coalition to disband.
