Employees at New York’s Long Island Railroad are going to through a stricter process when retiring, after it has been discovered that nearly every retiree has applied for and gotten hefty occupational disability pensions from the federal government.
“The high rate of approval for disability pensions is disconcerting, especially because there has been an 84 percent reduction in employee accidents since 1991,” said LIRR President Helena Williams.
Retirees will now go through a “watchdog” group that will make sure their injuries are consistent with their job within the LIRR. All applications are planned to be reviewed by an independent expert.
Employees also will go through additional ethics training and will be encouraged to report allegations of wrongdoing.
