At a May 1st rally back in 2000, South Africa’s new president, Kgalema Motlanthe, made his views on capitalism perfectly clear.
“You must hate this system of Capitalism first and foremost. Because if you don’t hate it you will not be able to engage in real struggles against this system,” Motlanthe, who was ANC Secretary General at the time, said.
Motlanthe is an interim president, replacing Thabo Mbeke. Despite his long standing in the ANC leadership, Motlanthe is a relative unknown to South Africans. Motlanthe reportedly got his parliamentary seat due to his association with ANC leader Jacob Zuma, who is likely to become president next year.
