Obama Calls For US Military Draft

In a statement that has been glossed over by the MainStream Media (and even most conservative bloggers), US Presidential candidate Barack Hussein Obama said on September 13th that his job as president would include demanding that the American people recognize an “obligation” for military service. “If we are going into war, then all of us go, not just some,” Obama declared at an evening forum on national service at Columbia University in New York City.

Republican presidential candidate John McCain, who also participated in the forum, also focused on expanding the US Armed Forces as a major goal of the next administration, at one point even jokingly offering Obama the position of coordinator for national service if he won. Obama reciprocated.

Obama said that combat was not the only option for service, and could include civilian positions that are adjuncts to US military operations overseas, such as the State Department, USAID or civil engineering. Obama has already called for a mandatory national service program as one of the main objectives if elected.

Congressman Charlie Rangel has unsuccessfully pushed for a mandatory draft for every US citizen between the ages of 18 and 42, including women. The Harlem Democrat is now battling an onslaught of tax evasion charges and calls for him to step down from his chair in the House Ways and Means Committee.

Obama also said Columbia University had made a “mistake” by not allowing ROTC recruitment on campus since 1969.  “The notion that young people here at Columbia or anywhere, in any university, aren’t offered the choice, the option of participating in military service, I think is a mistake,” Obama said.
