South Africa Headed For Civil War?

Moeletski MbekiPolitical commentator Moeletsi Mbeki, the brother and frequent critic of outgoing SA President Thabo Mbeki, said Wednesday the ongoing conflict within the ANC and the South African government could boil over into an all-out civil war.

“The ANC is destabilizing the country, it’s destabilizing its own country,” Moeletsi Mbeki said. “This is a warning to the ANC national executive committee that if they [....] continue to follow the path of not following the constitution, then they are going to lead this country to civil war.”

According to Moeletsi Mbeki, the ANC should have lodged a complaint with parliament following High Court Judge Nicholson’s scathing charges that the Mbeki Administration used its office to wage a personal vendetta against ANC leader Jacob Zuma. This would then have allowed for an investigation into whether President Mbeki was innocent or guilty.

Mbeki has a history of political dirty tricks. It has long been held that Mbeki was very possibly behind the murder of Chris Hani, the leader of the South African Communist Party. Cyril Ramaphosa, the second-most popular black leader in South Africa next to Mandela himself, and was chosen by Mandela to succeed him, is reportedly scared to death of Mbeki. Ramaphosa left politics and stayed out of it, despite being more popular than Mbeki, out of fears that Mbeki would murder him, writes South African political commentator Jan Lamprecht.

Zuma said the decision to recall Mbeki had been “one of the most painful and difficult decisions” taken in the ANC’s history. Mbeki is trying to salvage his reputation in the Constitutional Court by challenging the judge’s ruling which he says cost him his job as president.
