The House of Representatives’ Committee on Standards of Official Conduct voted Wednesday to start an ethics investigation into the personal finances and fund-raising of Representative Charlie Rangel.
The Right Perspective called for the Harlem Democrat to resign from his position of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee back in July when it was discovered he had a cozy deal for rent-controlled apartments with a Manhattan real estate developer. A tsunami of new tax scandals engulfed Rangel two weeks ago, promting the New York Times to call for his resignation. A new scandal involving alleged illegal use of the Congressional garage came out last week.
Acting ethics committee chairman, Gene Green, a Texas Democrat, said the investigation would determine whether Mr. Rangel “violated the Code of Official Conduct or any law, rule, regulation, or other standard of conduct.” Rangel has already paid $10,000 in back taxes and maintains his innocence.
