South Africa’s ANC Youth League has come under harsh criticism for stating outright that they will “kill for Jacob Zuma“.
The statement, made popular by ANCYL leader Julius Malema, prompted the ANC’s National Executive Committee to ask Zuma to take action against this promotion of this sentiment.
Some believe that Malema is actually speaking on behalf of the SACP (South African Communist Party) and COSATU (Congress of South African Trade Unions). “It may be that he finds himself more aligned to COSATU and the SACP than he does to his current organization,” says VOA reporter Delia Robertson. “It’s very difficult to believe that a lot of statements coming out of the youth league and even from Mr. Zuma’s supporters in COSATU and the SACP do not carry his tacit approval.”
The ANCYL has also released a song called “Hondo” which is “war” in the African language Shona. The song includes the repeated sound of gunfire and lyrics such as “forward with war (Phambili ngere hondo)” and “we have AKs (Ngithi thina siphethe amaaka)”.
This carries on a macabre tradition for Zuma, who is known for singing “Get Me My Machine Gun,” which is thought of by many as a call for racial genocide against white South Africans.
