The National Prosecuting Authority plans to challenge last week’s court decision throwing out the corruption charges it had brought against controversial ANC leader Jacob Zuma. It said it had yet to decide whether to bring the charges forward in an entirely new case.
This November, Zuma’s lawyers will try for a permanent stay of the graft charges on the grounds that a fair trial would be impossible after years of very public legal wrangling. Judge Nicholson, who ruled in Zuma’s favor last week, will hear this application. Judge Nicholson’s suggestion that Zuma had been the victim of political intrigue worthy ”of the works of Kafka” appears to have bolstered that application’s chances of success.
Observers believe that Zuma needs to do this before becoming president of South Africa so there is no sense of impropriety surrounding him.
