The New York Times has called for the resignation of Harlem congressman Charlie “The Red” Rangel from the chairmanship of his powerful Ways and Means Committee after a tsunami of new personal tax irregularities emerged over the weekend.
The new discrepancies include no reference to the sale of a Washington, DC home and a byzantine accounting of the value of property the Democrat congressman bought in Florida. Rangel spent the weekend with lawyers and accountants, including a forensic accounting expert, to try to unravel the sprawling, 20-year mess.
Rangel admitted to “sins of omission” in that he was “irresponsible” in failing to disclose $75,000 in rental income and pay federal and state taxes on a villa in the Dominican Republic. The New York Times blasted Rangel’s excuse of “cultural and language barriers” with Dominican officials as being “simply, offensive”.
These tax issues are particularly embarrassing for Rangel, whose job as chair of the Ways and Means Committee is to guide new tax law and oversee the budget of the United States.
Rangel’s personal finance problems began surfacing in early July, after it was revealed that he owned several rent-controlled apartments in a rather shady arrangement with a prominent New York City rental company:

Rangel emerged from a long day of meetings with Democrat lawmakers about his position as chair of the Ways and Means Committee with “nothing to say.” Fellow Democrat lawmaker Sander Levin said, “You’re damn right he’s the chairman,” when asked about Rangel’s fate.
