Obama: Terror Groups Have “Legitimate Claims”

Democrat Presidential candidate Barack Hussein Obama says terrorist groups Hamas and Hezbollah are “going down a blind alley with violence that weakens their legitimate claims,” in an interview today with NY Times columnist David Brooks.

What exactly the “legitimate claims” these terrorist groups have remains unclear. The official charter of Hamas calls for the murder of Jews and the destruction of Israel. Hezbollah claims to be fighting for liberation of its “lands,” which are held by Israel.

Obama said the U.S. needs a foreign policy that “looks at the root causes of problems and dangers.”

In his NYT interview, Obama said he would look to the more rational side of ideological nations such as Iran. “If your opponents are looking for your destruction it’s hard to sit across the table from them,” but, he continued: “There are rarely purely ideological movements out there. We can encourage actors to think in practical and not ideological terms. We can strengthen those elements that are making practical calculations.”
