Espionage (kinda) Goes Open Source

Members of America’s 16 agencies, such as the CIA, FBI and the National Security Agency, are being encouraged to use a new social networking program called “A-Space”, which has been dubbed “Facebook for Spies”.

“It’s every bit Facebook and YouTube for spies, but it’s much, much more,” said Michael Wertheimer, assistant deputy director of national intelligence for analysis. The idea is for analysts to share ideas in an open forum among peers on issues involving national security. “One perfect example is if Osama bin Laden comes out with a new video. How is that video obtained? Where are the very sensitive secret sources we may have to put into a context that’s not apparent to the rest of the world?” Wertheimer asked.

The program, which is still in a beta form, has none of the ageist attitudes that plague other social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook. “We have found that participation in A-Space crosses every conceivable age line and experience line. People are excited, no matter what age group,” Wertheimer said.

A-Space will only be available to people within the intelligence community who have the proper security clearance. The last thing America needs is another Johnathan Pollard.
