Talk radio’s “Lion of the Left,” Bernie Ward, has been sentenced to seven years and three months in prison after admitting to downloading and distributing child porn over the Internet. Ward’s excuse for distributing between 15 and 150 kiddie porn photos via e-mail was that he was “doing research for a book”. No evidence of a book being commissioned or written has yet been found.
Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker called Ward’s case a “personal tragedy” and noted that some aspects of the case were “disturbing”. Online chat logs from the case show Ward had developed sexual fantasies involving the sexual torture of his own children’s friends while they watched. There were other reports that the former Roman-Catholic priest Ward masturbated to child porn while conducting his “God Talk” radio program on Sunday mornings at KGO in San Francisco, CA.
Ward could get a year off his sentence for good behavior. However, he will have to register with police as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
After sentencing, Ward’s wife, Dr. Colleen Halloran, laced into an anti-GOP political tirade and blamed the Bush Adminstration for her husband’s failings in life: “This whole proceeding has been crushing with an anvil. The justice department sure hasn’t got any of the real terrorists out there, they got us into a war that was based on a lie, they can’t control the economy, they can’t control gas prices, but oh boy they got that really dangerous criminal Bernie Ward off the street and have destroyed his family, I thank you all very much.”
