Expropriation Bill “Scrapped”

First, it was to be re-written. Then, it was to be shelved until further notice. Now, the Communist-ANC has announced that its dreaded Expropriation Bill should be scrapped altogether.

The announcement came from Communist-ANC Treasurer General Mathews Phosa during a poverty conference in Pretoria. “As you know we thought deeply about the Expropriation Bill and we, after serious considerations, felt that it would not be the correct instrument to speed up the acquisition of land,” he said.

Phosa went on to say that “it became clear to us that market values and the encouragement of cooperation and help and advice from the state would be a better way of promoting the acquisition of land”, adding that South Africa “”will only be peaceful when a larger number of people own property and assets which they want to protect.”
